چکیده

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that the usage of the Bung-Wand-Weber (BWW) Ontology as a theory in method engineering is both feasible and relevant. Weber and his colleagues introduced the BWW Ontology as theoretical foundation for conceptual modeling. In this paper we describe how the BWW Ontology can be used to systematically underpin the development of modeling grammars. Since the development of modeling grammars belongs to the method engineering discipline we firstly discuss the necessity of a theoretical basis in this research stream. In the second part of the paper we investigate and summarize the rich set of empirical findings in the BWW Ontology domain. Lastly, we show how these theoretical findings can inform method engineering research. Including theory in method engineering has two advantages: Firstly, it is possible to predict the success or failure of the design and secondly, theory-driven design instantiates existing hypotheses and allows testing them.

Enhancing the Expressiveness of the Bunge-Wand-Weber Ontology

In practical terms, conceptual modeling is at the core of systems analysis and design. The plurality of modeling methods available has however been regarded as detrimental, and as a strong indication that a common view or theoretical grounding of modeling is wanting. This theoretical foundation must universally address all potential matters to be represented in a model, which consequently sugge...

BWW Ontology as a Lens on IS Design Theory: Extending the Design Science Research Roadmap

. The Design Science Research Roadmap (DSR-Roadmap) [1] aims to give detailed methodological guidance to novice researchers in Information Systems (IS) DSR. Focus group evaluation, one phase of the overall study, of the evolving DSR-Roadmap revealed that a key difficulty faced by both novice and expert researchers in DSR, is abstracting design theory from design. This paper explores the extensi...

A multi agent method for cell formation with uncertain situation, based on information theory

This paper assumes the cell formation problem as a distributed decision network. It proposes an approach based on application and extension of information theory concepts, in order to analyze informational complexity in an agent- based system, due to interdependence between agents. Based on this approach, new quantitative concepts and definitions are proposed in order to measure the amount of t...

Designing Stochastic Cell Formation Problem Using Queuing Theory

This paper presents a new nonlinear mathematical model to solve a cell formation problem which assumes that processing time and inter-arrival time of parts are random variables. In this research, cells are defined as a queue system which will be optimized via queuing theory. In this queue system, each machine is assumed as a server and each part as a customer. The grouping of machines and parts...

Integrating multi-perspective views into ontological analysis

It is argued that contribution to the theory and practice of the analysis and design of information systems and services within organizational contexts requires the following steps. First, an underlying theoretical domain is needed. Second, the constructs of this domain have to be communicated using some commonly understood “language.” Third, these constructs have to be applied to purposes that...
